MAP SERIES

THE MAP SERIES

In 2006, after 26 years of managing Wet Studios, I took a one-year sabbatical to travel, which evolved into a three year journey. This included my living in Prague for the better part of 2007. With my return to San Francisco I felt a need to pay homage to my travels with painting. In this series, I have taken maps and digitally printed them on canvas, then painted images on these maps with oil paints.

The idea of two-dimensional maps representing such a three-dimensional experience seems an obvious way to relate the thought behind these pieces. In addition, there is the ever-present dialectic or dichotomy, which exists, in the different 'focal depths' of painting, which is a strong metaphor as it relates to our own experience of people and places.

The map series inspired a series dedicated to the symbolism and power of the eyes.
